Free Hand Sewing Lessons Vintage Teaching and Learning to Sew 3 year course and some fond memories

Although not extensively illustrated, this "Hand Sewing Lessons -- A Graded Course for Schools and for the Home" by Sarah Ewell Krolik should interest teachers, homeschoolers and anybody else (children through adult) who wishes to teach hand sewing, or to learn to sew.
This might have come in handy years ago when I taught my oldest son extremely basic hand sewing. He made his own pillow out of one of his favorite Scooby Doo shirts that he had outgrown. He was so proud of it and LOVED using his own creation. The experience is a fond memory.
It's also a huge bonus. Years later, he had a hole in his pants. Rather than rely on somebody else to fix it, he sewed it up all on his own in great, small stitches. Wow, was his grandmother surprised and impressed.
The ebook is offered by Homeschool Freebie of the Day. Here's how Jim Erskine describes it:
"This vintage instruction manual, originally published in 1905, is a great THREE YEAR course in hand sewing basics designed for home or school instruction. This is quite different than the sewing resource we offered months ago. Lots of helpful instructions for the teacher, with many projects and ideas for teaching. Check it out if you are interested in teaching this largely neglected but eminently practical skill."

Free Straight Talk to Parents and Teens from Homeschool Grads PDF ebook

Jim Erskine is offering his book, "STRAIGHT TALK TO PARENTS (and) TEENS FROM HOMESCHOOL GRADS" for free right now instead of the normal price of $4.95.
Although the advice is from homeschool graduates, I suspect parents of any teenager might find something of use in this free PDF ebook.
     Here's how Erskine describes it:
"Some of the candid advice shared in this report WILL challenge your own ideas about homeschooling your teens and “almost teens”.
Some of it will encourage you, some will convict you. Some will give you immediate “hands on” ideas you can use in your homeschooling right away, and some could very likely make you  change the way you have been interacting with your teens up until now.
Some may “turn on a lightbulb” and give you (and your teens) one of those”Aha!” moments — where you can clearly see the answers and goals you have been looking for for a long time. But hidden deep inside these pages are the keys that could completely transform the relationship between you and your teens.
This is powerful material, not for the faint-hearted! (Regularly $4.95, but free ONLY at Homeschool Freebie of the Day!)"

ABOUT NOAA's TEACHER AT SEA PROGRAM
Are you an educator interested in doing research on a ship? If so, we encourage you to explore the opportunities offered by the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Teacher at Sea Program, which will be accepting applications fromOctober 1 – 31, 2012.

The mission of NOAA’s Teacher at Sea program is to give teachers a clearer insight into our ocean planet, a greater understanding of maritime work and studies, and to increase their level of environmental literacy by fostering an interdisciplinary research experience.

Since 1990, NOAA’s Teacher at Sea Program has enabled nearly 600 teachers to gain first-hand experience of science and life at sea by working on research ships. Teachers have enriched their classroom curricula with a depth of understanding made possible by living and working side-by-side, day and night, with those who contribute to the world's body of scientific knowledge. No matter which type of cruise you embark on, you are bound to learn an array of new things!

ELIGIBILITY
NOAA's Teacher at Sea program accepts applications from currently employed, full-time educators in these categories: K-12 teachers and administrators; community college, college, and university teachers; museum and aquarium educators; and adult education teachers. We regret that we cannot accept applications from part-time, substitute, or pre-service teachers. Teachers will be selected to fill approximately 25-30 openings.

TYPES OF CRUISES
Participants are assigned a cruise aboard one of NOAA's ships or a partner charter ship. NOAA conducts three main types of cruises:
·         Fisheries research cruises perform biological and physical surveys to ensure sustainable fisheries and healthy marine habitats.

·         Oceanographic research cruises perform physical science studies to increase our understanding of the world's oceans and climate.
·         Hydrographic survey cruises scan the coastal sea floor to locate submerged obstructions and navigational hazards for the creation and update of the nation's nautical charts.

TIME COMMITMENT
Participants can expect to be at sea anywhere from one week to one month, with the average cruise lasting 12-14 days. Most of our participants try to sail on cruises offered during the summer vacation, but cruises take place throughout most of the year on a space-available basis.

COSTS
The program pays for all necessary travel costs, including transportation to and from the ship, lodging, and per diem allowance. Participant’s airfare is paid for up front by the program and all other costs are reimbursed.

If you're read this blog once in a while, chances are that as soon as you saw this post you knew I was excited about the freebie (arts and crafts nut and kid at heart that I am.) Paper crafts are especially cool because they can be cheap if you use the recycled kind!
Well, today over at Homeschool Freebie of the Day Jim Erskine is offering the vintage book "PAPER AND SCISSORS (PDF ebook). Sure, kids (homeschoolers or brick and mortar students alike, I should think) will enjoy this. But so will parents and grandparents and great grandparents. Plus especially paper crafts artists, card-makers, etc.
Here's how Erskine describes the book:
"A timeless classic guide to paper folding and construction, both for fun (think toys, doll furniture, etc.), eye-hand coordination, dexterity, and as an introduction to learning geometrical figures. This practical and systematic
